Transforming Workspaces: The Chipman Design and Architecture Headquarters Project

THE CHALLENGE

Chipman Design and Architecture, a leading firm with offices in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, sought to relocate their corporate headquarters into a new 36,000-square-foot space. Known for their innovative designs for clients such as Chick-Fil-A, Shake Shack, Ulta, and Tumi, Chipman needed a workspace that reflected their high standards while being cost-effective. They engaged Applied Ergonomics through our long-time broker and friend, John Pikarski of JD Partners. Despite being up against a major competitor in the Chicago market, we were determined to deliver a superior solution.

THE SOLUTION

Architects and designers need extensive surface space for their work, a need that standard workstations could not meet. John Chipman, the company’s Chairman, emphasized the importance of ergonomic solutions that promote health and productivity. This need aligned perfectly with our expertise. We custom-engineered our ErgoAdvantage electric height-adjustable bases to fit oversized workstations, extending up to 101 inches—far beyond the industry standard of 72 inches.

We partnered with Tayco using our office as their primary Chicago showroom to demonstrate the products. We hosted a large group of Chipman employees, showcasing the beauty and functionality of our solutions highlighting their smooth and quiet operation and practical benefits. We also featured the Ergo Advantage training tables, along with training room chairs chosen specifically for their comfort.

THE RESULT

Applied Ergonomics successfully completed the project, which included:

  • 122 architect/designer workstations

  • 5 Principal hubs interspersed to ensure managers were amongst their teams

  • Ergonomic task chairs

  • A fully equipped training room

  • Relocation of most private office furniture, the resource library, and lobby furnishings

The training room featured our ErgoAdvantage training tables with a unique flip and nesting base for high-density storage, paired with 96” x 18” Tayco surfaces matching the workstation colors. After thorough sit-testing, the Allseating Tuck chairs were selected for their ergonomic benefits.

Despite intense competition, Applied Ergonomics successfully delivered custom, high-value solutions at competitive prices. We completed the project on time and within budget, earning the respect and continued partnership of Chipman Design and Architecture
